About Project

Hemiptera Poloniae project has emerged within the Polish Biodiversity Information Network. The aim of the project is creation of a complete and up-to-date source of knowledge on hemipterans (Insecta: Hemiptera) fauna of Poland. This is a joint initiative of the many specialists from different research centres in Poland, in co-operation with University of Warsaw and the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS in Warsaw. We plan to use all available data sources on distribution and biology of hemipteran species. The starting point is the dataset available from published volumes of Catalogue of Fauna of Poland dealing with particular hemipteran groups. The content of the catalogues will be digitized and it will constitute the core of the information system of the project - the Hemiptera@PL Database. Currently, the first stage of the project is developing, i.e. digitization of information stored in the printed volumes of the Catalogue. The progress of the works can be seen at the Hemiptera@PL Database page.

The website content will be changed along with progress of project works.

About Hemipterans

The Hemiptera (aphids, plant lice, coccids, scale inscts, whiteflies, planthoppers, singing cicadas, froghoppers, spittlebugs, leafhoppers, bugs) is on of the ”Big Five” insect orders (with Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera) in terms of taxonomic diversity. The extant and extinct hemipterans are split into over 260 families. It is the highest number of families among insect orders. Fossil record of the hemipterans reaches Lower Permian (circa 280 Mya). Recently, the hemipterans are present throughout all continents, in land and water habitats, including open oceans. Numerous hemipterans are endemic and/or relic (also troglophiles and hypogeic forms are quite frequent), representing all trophic groups (phytophages, predators, ectoparasites), including species of economic and epidemic importance. The classification of the Hemiptera is still under debate, and numerous minor and major changes are implemented. The division of the Hemiptera into suborders and infraorders is given below:

      Suborder: Paleorrhyncha†
      Suborder: Sternorrhyncha
    • Infraorder: Pincombeomorpha†
    • Infraorder: Aphidomorpha
    • Infraorder: Coccinea
    • Infraorder: Aleyrodomorpha
    • Infraorder: Psylliformes
      Suborder: Fulgoromorpha
      Suborder: Cicadomorpha
      Suborder: Coleorrhyncha
      Suborder: Heteroptera
    • Infraorder: Nepomorpha
    • Infraorder: Cimicomorpha
    • Infraorder: Dipsocoromorpha
    • Infraorder: Enicocephalomorpha
    • Infraorder: Gerromorpha
    • Infraorder: Aradomorpha
    • Infraorder: Leptopodomorpha
    • Infraorder: Pentatomomorpha

The current information about the bugs (Heteroptera) is available on the Heteroptera Study Group (Uniwersytet Opolski) web site, providing the project Heteroptera Poloniae.
